Midtown

Cultural center of Detroit, with colorful storefronts, tree-lined streets, and booming revitalization.

Welcome to Midtown

A vibrant urban center of Detroit

Aptly named, as the neighborhood is nestled between two more of Detroit’s best communities, Brush Park and New Center, Midtown is the cultural center of Detroit. With colorful storefronts, tree-lined streets, and booming revitalization everywhere, this neighborhood appeals to those seeking a lively, urban center with livable, walkable streets and a flourishing community.

Throughout its tenure as one of the premier districts in Detroit, Midtown has been through many changes, though its attention and priority to the arts has never wavered. Originally a portion of Cass Corridor before the mid-1970s, when the area was officially rebranded as Midtown, the neighborhood occupies an ideal location in the city.

People and Lifestyle

Boasting an urban feel with electric surroundings that constantly brim with new activity and nightlife, Midtown is a lively and diverse city with an amazing university and gorgeous residential areas despite the urban setting. Home to many bars, restaurants, cafes, and shops, Midtown is bursting with young, highly educated professionals. A great place to bridge the gap between slick city streets and charming historic buildings, Midtown is an oasis in the cultural center of Detroit.

Dining, Shopping, and Entertainment

Midtown is filled with a plethora of entertainment options, from museums to art galleries to top-rated restaurants and shopping plazas. For the family, professional, or tourist, there’s never a shortage of opportunity!

After soaking up local history, arts, and culture, stop by some local boutiques and conveniently located well-known brands for some shopping. Check out Shinola’s flagship store for some excellent gifts, or Carhartt, a world-renowned but Detroit-local brand. To explore even further, try any number of attractive shops such as Source Booksellers, City Bird, Flo’s Boutique, and more.

To relax after a full day of visiting museums and shopping, grab a delicious, locally-sourced meal at Selden Standard, which prides itself on community, or Grey Ghost, named after a Prohibition-era Detroit pirate. If that doesn’t suit you, head over to Honest John’s, where you can chow down on some contemporary blended brunch and breakfast foods, or for a change of pace, check out Shewolf Detroit, an elevated dining experience focused on bringing Old Rome to life with new vitality.

Things to Do

Since the area is replete with a rich history, it makes sense that one of the best things to do in Midtown is to visit its museums. But even if museums aren’t your thing, the festivals and annual events make the area come alive.

Take the whole family or a significant other or even a group of friends to Noel Night, a local open house for the eateries, festivities, shops, and bars, and breweries. There are even horse-drawn carriage rides! Escape the cold and check out the early-autumn DLECTRICITY, a lights, and technology festival. Enjoy more of Midtown’s art scene at the Concert of Colors festival or the African World Festival to immerse yourself in international culture with art, food, and more.

The museum district, also rightfully known as Detroit’s Cultural Center, hosts museums such as the Detroit Institute of the Arts, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. As for mainstay attractions, bring your dog to the Midtown Detroit Dog Park to interact with other adorable pets, as well as the for-humans-too Cass Park, which is just a five-minute drive away.

Schools

Midtown is home to many excellent schools. Top educational opportunities include:

  • School of Medicine - Wayne State University
  • Cass Technical High School
  • International Baccalaureate, a city-wide, college-preparatory, examination-entry school of choice
