A New Chapter on Detroit’s Riverfront: Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Centennial Park
Detroit is set to celebrate the long-anticipated opening of Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Centennial Park, a 22-acre public space that transforms the west riverfront into one of the city’s most dynamic community destinations. On October 25–26, 2025, the park will officially open with a festive weekend celebration as part of Detroit Harvest Fest.
More than just a park, this project is a bold investment in community, recreation, and the natural beauty of the Detroit River.
A Park for Everyone
Once known as West Riverfront Park, this area has been reimagined and renamed to honor philanthropist Ralph C. Wilson, Jr., whose foundation contributed generously to its creation and long-term care (Detroit Riverfront Conservancy).
The park has been designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, an internationally renowned landscape architecture firm, to cater to a diverse audience — from families with young children to athletes, nature lovers, and those seeking a peaceful spot to enjoy the water.
Signature Features
-
Delta Dental Play Garden – A vibrant, nature-inspired play space featuring animal-shaped climbing structures and slides, perfect for children of all ages.
-
William Davidson Sport House – A striking oval pavilion with two basketball courts, designed as a hub for recreation and community activity.
-
Huron-Clinton Metroparks Water Garden – A beautiful 2.5-acre naturalized water garden featuring boardwalks, seating, and open-air classrooms — the Metroparks’ first-ever presence in the city of Detroit.
-
Barbara M. Erb Cove & Shoreline – A reshaped and more natural waterfront edge, creating new habitat and places for people to connect with the river.
-
Event Lawn & Flexible Spaces – An expansive green space for concerts, cultural events, fitness activities, and family gatherings.
Each of these areas is designed to enhance the riverfront experience and bring Detroiters closer to their city’s most defining natural feature — the river itself.
